December 4 – Saint John Damascene

Born in Damascus (in Seria) to a Christian family. At the death of his father, John became the governor of Damascus. But the emperor had passed a law prohibiting images of saints or our Our Lord. John continued to defend the right of the Christians and the emperor was enraged. John resigned and became a monk, dedicating the rest of his life to writing books defending the Catholic religion. At the same time, he worked in the monastery and sold baskets to defray the necessities of the monastery.
