The first saint canonized in the United States was an Italian woman who wanted to go to China. But such are the ways of God. Pope Leo XIII asked her to come to the United States instead and work with the Italian immigrants who were arriving in large numbers and she dedicated her life to the cause. She opened convents and schools, and traveled tirelessly.
