July 1 – Blessed Junipero Serra

If many cities in California have names of saints (San Diego, San Franciscan Santa Clara, San Juan Capistrano…) it is because of the feet of Blessed Junipero. Better yet, it was because of his feet, his heart, his head, and his full dedication to the mission. It is said that Blessed Junipero, a Spaniard Franciscan priest of the 18th Century walked from Veracruz to Mexico City (about 240 miles). He had always wanted to be a missionary to carry the message of the Gospel to those who had never before heard the name of the Lord. He was 56 years old when he established his first mission, San Diego, and traveled up through California establishing a chain of missions. He was 71 when he passed away and had received 6000 people who were native to the region into the church
