April 21 - Saint Anselm

His mother died when he was still very young and his father had to fulfill the role of father and mother. But he was very harsh and it served Anselm to avoid following in the steps of his peers. His father seemed too oppressive and so he left his home until he arrived at a monastery where Anselm asked to be admitted.  Shortly after he became the prior and abbot of the monastery and was devoted to all with great charity, and was happy praying and studying. He wrote much and laid the foundations for the branch of theology called Scholasticism. His famous words are: “I do not seek to understand in order that I may believe, but I believe in order that I may understand. Whoever does not believe does not experience, and whoever does not experience does not believe.” With kindness and energy he defended the Pope in times of conflict, although he was exiled twice for this.

What makes you happy? Are you seeking in the knowledge of God a source of joy?  How do you try to better understand your faith?
