John studied much and learned grammar, mathematics, music, poetry, astronomy and, above all, theology. He was counselor to the Calif in Damascus. He introduced knowledge in the Arab world and he also attracted upon himself lots of jealousy and persecution. When, after various calumnies and persecutions, he recuperated the trust of the prince, he decided to withdraw to write on doctrine and prayer.
