She appeared to the young Bernardita de Soubirous, who was a very poor and illiterate girl. Mary told Bernardita that she was the Immaculate Conception, when the dogma was only recently proclaimed and there was no possible way for Bernardita to have known those words. In the place where she appeared, a spring arose where innumerable physical and spiritual cures have occurred. It is a common pilgrimage site.
