February 6 - Saint Paul Miki and martyr companions of Japan

 

In the 16th century there was a great persecution of Christians in Japan as they were accused of not being loyal enough to the country. Twenty-six Christians, from various places of the country, both religious and lay people, were crucified in Nagasaki with Paul Miki. Martyrdom seems to be something of the past, and yet, Christians continue to be persecuted in many countries today.
