January 31 – Saint John Bosco

One of the most likeable and most popular Italian saints is Saint John Bosco, born in Turin in 1815. His parents were poor farmers and his father died when John was only 2 years old. His mother had to work hard to support the family. John worked as soon as he could to be able to help his family. He wanted to be a priest, but knew that they family was unable to pay for it. A priest friend finally helped him to enter the seminary where he had to work all kinds of jobs to be able to pay for his studies. As a priest, John took advantage of his experiences and taught trades to the youth of the street. Later he started a congregation of priest to work with the youth. They are known as Silesians.
