She was the grandmother of another saint, Saint Basil, whom she raised. During a persecution of Christians, Macrina and her husband were expelled from the city and took refuge in the woods, where they lived in poverty for a while. A few years after their return to the city, there was another persecution and all their possessions were taken away from them. They were left with nothing but their faith and their trust in God´s providence.
