Paul was born in Egypt during the 3rd century. He was a Christian and at the time the Roman Empire was persecuting the followers of Christ. In addition, Paul had the bad luck that his brother-in-law wanted his money and properties and could accuse him before the authorities. So St. Paul went to the desert where he discovered his true vocation to prayer and devoted the rest of his life to this.
