National Migration WeekJanuary 8th through the 14th marks National Migration Week. It is a time to reflect on our journey as immigrants or as children of immigrants, with a focus on those who are undocumented.2011 was a year full of hopes and struggles for the immigrant community. Immigration reform and other initiatives never came to fruition, yet our community keeps hoping. We had small victories at the local level in different states and the efforts never ceased. That’s something that still needs to be celebrated. Now, as we begin 2012, and as we celebrate National Migration Week, we...
I consider myself a big fan of sports. As a Hispanic, soccer is in my blood and I follow it avidly around the world. But another sport I really like is volleyball. I love playing it but I also love spending time watching it and seeing great displays of athletic abilities. The other night I tuned into women’s college volleyball. It’s a big national competition that draws hundreds of thousands of viewers every year. I had the chance to watch the Texas Longhorns vs. UCLA Bruins. As I was watching it I was thinking that both California and Texas are in the top five states with the highest...
Undocumented parents and education I remember when I started college. It was intimidating and overwhelming at times. I remember looking for help at home, and not being able to find answers to my questions regarding college or decisions I had to make. My parents never went to school formally; hence it was difficult for them to give me advice. But they were always there. I always had all the emotional support I needed from them. Now that I look back I realize how lucky I was to have them walk with me, though at their own pace, but always there.I also remember that out of my High School...
In our last blog we talked about Hispanic Heritage Month and all the things we should celebrate about our Latino roots. But I believe part of that pride should include recognizing the struggles that our community is going through. There is nothing new about undocumented immigrants struggling with different issues, or students fighting for their right to get an education and fulfill their professional vocations. One of the latest aggressions against the immigrant community comes from the state of Alabama, where a judge ruled in favor of allowing state and local police to ask for...
Living out Our Vows This past weekend my brother Sydney and I made our final profession of vows! It was a moment of great joy but was accompanied by some nervousness and a sense of responsibility. Leading up to this moment were many nights reflecting on what the Evangelical Councils (vows) mean to me; chastity, poverty, and obedience. Much can be said about these vows and over the next few weeks I will write a brief reflection about each one.As Oblates we also take a 4th vow, as some other religious orders do, and that vows is called Perseverance. Originally the vow was put in place so...
National Hispanic Heritage MonthSeptember 15 through October 15 marks in the U.S. what has become known as National Hispanic Heritage Month. Every year, Hispanics have the chance to celebrate and reminisce about our heritage and what makes us unique, without being arrogant, in this country. But what is the month about? What do we celebrate? This month should be a time to look inward and to express gratitude for all we have and for all we can offer this country. It is a time to celebrate the best of what Latinos have to offer this great nation. On September 25 CNN aired “Latino in America 2: In...
