December 28 - Holy Innocents

The Holy Family had to flee Bethlehem because Jesus was in grave danger. In the New Testament, Mary, Joseph and Jesus are the first political exiles. They left their country because of persecution. In this sense, they represent a great model and comfort to the many immigrants, refugees and exiles in our days. Leaving your own country is not easy; doing it out of fear of persecution is even harder. The pain of being uprooted is coupled to the panic and anxiety about what could happen. The fact that Jesus and his parents went through this, offers us the security of the solidarity of God with our causes.

Have you experienced or do you know someone who has experienced being exiled? How does that feel? In which ways do you think that experience could help others?
