Stephen was a deacon in the first church and was the first person to be martyred for the faith in Jesus Christ. When he was about to be stoned, he lifted his eyes to heaven and announced that he saw the sky open and Jesus Christ had come in glory. St. Stephen died forgiving his persecutors. The Church considers that the true martyrdom or testimony of faith must necessarily include the forgiveness of enemies.
