His father was an official in the Palestinian army, and when he was assigned to Alexandria, the young Sabbas went to live with an uncle and wife, who mistreated him.  He escaped and went to live with another uncle, which led to a dispute among the uncles. Sabbas ran away again to a monastery where he was very happy.  His uncles reconciled and asked him to return home, but St. Sabbas wanted to remain with God.
