November 23 - St. Columbanus

As a child, Columbanus expressed the desire to become a monk but his mother could not bear the thought of it. He left home to fulfill what Columbanus considered to be the will of God for him. After several years in Ireland, he traveled with other monks to France where there was a shortage of priests. Many people were attracted to the message and life of Columbanus and that of his fellow monks that they decided to open many monasteries. Of course, they encountered opposition and resistance from people who considered the monks to be too strict. They even confronted the king of France and as a result they had to return to Ireland. St. Columbanus later traveled to Switzerland and Italy to preach the faith.

Would you face opposition from your family if you felt that God was calling you to serve him with complete dedication? What arguments would you use with them?
