November 18 – St. Rose Philippine Duchesne

A wealthy and spoiled young girl from France, who enjoyed history, she became interested in the history and culture of Native Americans. At the age of 17 she felt a great calling to give her life to God and became a missionary, but due to political events in her country, she was unable to remain in the convent. It was not until the age of 50 that Rose finally fulfilled her desire of becoming a missionary and was sent to the Unites States, where she worked in Mississippi in a school for children that were poor. With time her personality and character were softened. She established convents and schools. When she was 71, she went to work in a school for Native American children, where she was called “the woman who always prays.”
