Martin is the first Peruvian saint. He was born in Lima in 1579; his father was a Spaniard and his mother a liberated slave of African descent. Martin brings together his roots, culture, and life as a barber, surgeon, and lay brother presenting a challenge to any form of discrimination and racism. With his life and miracles, St. Martin affirms the dignity of people from any color or race.
