Zacchaeus wanted to be acknowledged as a person. His job as a tax collector was not pleasing to people. When Jesus looks at him—that is, recognizes his existence—and asks him to come down and invite him to dinner, he recovers a measure of dignity and humanity he had lost. Zacchaeus comes down quickly and full of joy receives Jesus.
