September 27 - Saint Vincent De Paul

Vincent came from a poor farm working family and as a child cared for the pigs. But, because he was intelligent, his father sacrificed himself so that Vincent could have an education. Vincent became a priest and at first was the tutor for rich children and lived very comfortably. But one day they called him to the death bed of a poor farmworker. Vincent realized then how much the poor needed of his spiritual ministry. He began to assist them and finally decided to found a congregation for priests who would work directly with the poor. With Saint Louise de Marillac, they founded the Congregation of the Daughters of Charity. Vincent opened hospitals and orphanages. He raised many funds for the poor, sent many missionaries to different areas and paid the ransom for many Christian prisoners in Africa. Even though he was very charitable, he confessed to not being naturally kind, and that he would have been a harsh man with a bad temper, if it were not for the grace of God.
