September 22 - Saint Thomas of Villanova

Thomas learned how to care for the poor through his parents. He was very intelligent and studied philosophy. He later joined the Augustine Order. He was bishop of Valencia, Spain. His priests tried to convince him to change his old habit for newer more elegant and dignifying clothes. But Thomas decided that his clothes had nothing to do with his duties. He would feed many every day. When they gave him excess money to buy furniture for the house, he gave it to a hospital, asking what need a poor frail would have for furniture. Before dying, he gave instructions to give his bed to a jail so that a prisoner would be able to use it.
