He lived during the second half of the 12th century and the first half of the 13th century. In his native France there were many religious wars due to all the diverse heresies. Bertrand’s parents gave him a good Christian education and at a young age, Bertrand joined the Cistercian monastery. He later met Saint Dominic who invited him, along with four others to initiate the Order of Preachers. He did so and was one of Dominic’s major collaborators as well as a great preacher.
