September 3. Saint Gregory the Great

He was a politician, but it seems he got tired of that life and became a monk. Although he was young, Pope Pelagius II sent him as a delegate to Constantinople and then he was elected pope. He sent missionaries to England. He liked music and reformed the liturgy (we owe Gregorian chant to him). In his homilies and writings he reflected a deep knowledge of Scripture.

“The proof of love is in the works. Where there is love great things are accomplished. When there love does not work, it just dies out.” Saint Gregory the Great
