Born in 1835, son of an Italian postman. When he decided to become a priest, he had to make many sacrifices to gain his education, because his family had no money to pay for his schooling. But everything he had, he gave to the poor. After being ordained a priest, he worked with the poor in parishes for 17 years. After the death of Leon XIII, he was elected pope. He was known as the pope of the Eucharist. He invited the faithful to frequently take communion and institutionalized the tradition of First Communion at an early age.
