August 20 – Saint Bernard

His mother passed away while he was still an adolescent, his sister Humbelina took him out of his depression. He was an intelligent good looking young man and very social. One day he surprised everyone with the decision of being a monk. They tried convincing him otherwise, but in the end, Bernard was the one to convince his brothers, an uncle and twenty six friends who joined him. They all joined him, and went to the abbey. Later, Bernard was sent to start a new monastery in Clairvaux. Even thought he would have liked to have stayed at his monastery, they often asked him for special tasks: he bought peace between diverse governments and advised popes. He wrote beautiful spiritual books. He died in 1153.
