St. Lawrence was one of the first deacons of the Church and it appears that he was in charge of the administration. When the emperor insisted that Lawrence present the Church’s treasures, he gathered the poor in the city and brought them to the emperor: “here are our treasures,” he said.  St. Lawrence was martyred.
