July 31 - Saint Ignatius of Loyola


Ignatius was born in the 15th century into an aristocratic family in the Basque region of northern Spain. He was the youngest of 11 children and a page in the court of Castile. Injured during battle, while recuperating he began reading the life of saints and experienced a powerful conversion and call to follow Jesus Christ. Ignatius went to Paris, enrolled in the university where he studied philosophy and theology. He founded the Company of Jesus, known as the Jesuits. He was ordained into the priesthood and dedicated his life to writing the Spiritual Exercises, creating the constitutions of the Jesuits, and founding universities and schools. His work has spread worldwide.
