July 16 – Our Lady of Mount Carmel

Mount Carmel, a mountain that looks to the plains of Galilee, became famous when the prophet Elijah made a miracle there. In the 8th century, some European monks went to live there, establishing the Carmelite Order, which honors Maria as Our Lady of Mount Carmel. On July 16, 1251, Our Lady appeared to Simon Stock, who was the superior of the Order and gave him a brown colored scapular. She promised her protection on the Carmelites. Our Lady of Mount Carmel is also the patron saint of the missionaries and of Chile.
