July 8 - Blessed Eugene III

He was a diocesan priest in Pisa, Italy, in the 12th century, when he felt the call to be Cistercian. He joined the San Bernardo of Caravel’s monastery. Bernardo named him the superior of another monastery in Rome and when he was there the pope died and strangely enough the cardinals named him Pope. He went through many difficulties during his papacy; he had to leave Rome a number of times to avoid danger. He took refuge in monasteries to gain strength and later returned to face the situation. He would dress in his Cistercian habit and lived simply.
