Blessed Junipero Serra entered the Franciscan order at a very young age and was sent on mission to the New World. He traveled throughout California establishing missions in locations that still bear the same name he gave them: San Diego, Santa Clara, San Luis Obispo, San Juan Capistrano, San Gabriel… After walking for countless miles, Junipero died in Mission San Carlos in 1784.
