Paulinus, a French man who lived between the 4th and 5th century, was married but his wife desired a life of profound prayer. They sold everything they owned, gave it to the poor and dedicated themselves to prayer. Paulinus went on to become the bishop of Nola. It is said that a widow asked him for alms to rescue her captive son and Paulinus offered himself in exchange. He served the king of the Vandals as a gardener until the king realize Paulinus’ sacrifice and set him free so he could return to his diocese.
