The first Ecuadorian saint, from the Third Order of the Franciscans, lived in prayer in her parents’ home, and did works of charity. She established a clinic and school for indigenous and African people. When the plague was declared, St. Mariana de Jesús de Paredes was devoted to caring for the sick and died shortly afterwards; she was just 29 years old.
