May 25 – Saint Gregory VII

During the times of Gregory (the 10th century and the first half of the 11th), the Church was struck by various ills, such as the sale of positions and sacred articles, the marriage of the clergy, and the clerical investiture of kings and politicians. Gregory had to deal with all this and struggled to maintain the unity of the Church. He fought to maintain the independence of the Church from the political powers, and paid a high price, in the end, dying in exile.
