He was not one of the apostles directly called by Jesus, but was chosen by the apostles after the Ascension to replace Judas of Iscariot to maintain the number twelve that was an important number for the Israelites. He must have been witness to the Resurrection of Christ. Matthias was eligible and was chosen as an apostle, faithfully continuing the mission with the other eleven.
