Peter was the son of a poor family of the Canary Islands and during his youth worked as a shepherd. In contact with nature, he deepened his life of prayer. Peter felt a strong calling to work in the New World and traveled to Guatemala. There, he joined the Society of Jesus, but because of his academic failures, left the order. Someone has invited him to be a Franciscan brother, but Peter felt God called him to continue in the world and dedicated himself to work for the African slaves, the indigenous people as well as others in need. He founded the Order of the brothers and Sisters of Bethlemite to care for the poor. In Guatemala, he is known as “mother of the Guatemalans”.
