Vincent was born during the terrible plague that was afflicting Europe during the 14th century, but miraculously he was saved. When he was 17-years-old, Vincent joined the Dominicans. He would later be involved in another great illness, only this time it was moral: the Schism of the West, where there were up to three people who claimed the title of Pope. Vincent devoted himself entirely to his studies where he excelled thanks to his intelligence and oratory. He preached throughout Spain and later in Europe. He was followed by multitudes, but he was interested more in people having a personal encounter with Christ than in his own fame.
