April 3 - Saint Irene

Irene was one of three Greek sisters who were martyred for their faith in 304. They were carried out before the governor of Macedonia because the sisters refused to eat food that had been sacrificed to the gods. Irene’s two sisters were burned alive. Meanwhile, the governor of Macedonia found out that Irene continued to read the Christian books and that she had fled to the mountains. When she was arrested, she refused to give up the names of the others who had fled with her. She was taken to a brothel, but Irene did not abandon her faith. She was then offered an opportunity to reject her faith and when she refused, she was condemned to death.
