The city of Carthage was invaded in 439. The bishop and the priests were arrested and sent adrift on a boat. For 14 years, Carthage remained without a bishop. The Emperor Valentino of Rome requested that the leader of the Vandals, which had invaded Carthage, allow the ordination of another bishop. The leader accepted and Degratius, who was a young priest, was ordained. He was respected by everyone and very loved by the Christians.
