March 22 - Saint Deogratius
The city of Carthage was invaded in 439. The bishop and the priests were arrested and sent adrift on a boat. For 14 years, Carthage remained without a bishop. The Emperor Valentino of Rome requested that the leader of the Vandals, which had invaded Carthage, allow the ordination of another bishop. The leader accepted and Degratius, who was a young priest, was ordained. He was respected by everyone and very loved by the Christians. But then the Vandals invaded Rome and separated families, selling individual members as slaves. Deogratius heard of this and purchased as many slaves as he could to return them to their families. This is how St. Deogratius was able to free many families.
In what ways can you fight for the liberation of others?
