February 6 – Saint Paul Miki and Companion Martyrs

They are the twenty six martyrs from Japan. They were arrested under the suspicion of treason against Japan and of wanted to turn over the country to Spain and Portugal. Part of the problem, also, was the fact that Christianity was seen as being too distant from the Japanese culture. The priests, religious and lay catechists were martyred in 1597.

In what ways can the Gospel speak in your culture? Is there a need of a specific culture for Christians?
