January 23 - Saint John the Almsgiver

He was a rich noble who used his riches and position to help the poor. After his wife passed away, John became a priest and was later named bishop. In 608, he was consecrated as patriarch of Alexandria. John began his work on finding a solution to the divisions that existed in the community. He promised to practice charity without any limit. As patriarch, he dedicated his weekdays to speaking with those who wanted to talk to him. All types of different people would go, from the helpless to the rich. John established a system where the poor and refugees could receive help. He is named the Almsgiver for his great charity.

How do I respond to people in need of me,  whether it be material goods or time?
