January 20 - Saints Fabian and Sebastian

Two saints of the early times of Christianity, Fabian and Sebastian were martyrs in two different persecutions of Roman emperors. Fabian was elected pope when he was a layman. He was bishop and martyr.

Sebastian was a Roman soldier known for his great courage but also for his great kindness. During the persecution of Diocletian, he was pierced by arrows and left for dead. A woman found him, and surprised to see he was still alive, she took him home, tended his wounds and cured him. When Sebastian was better, people advised him to leave the city. Instead, he went to the emperor and requested that he cease the persecution of Christians. Diocletian became angry and refused to listen. The emperor ordered Sebastian clubbed to death. He died in 288.
