Anthony was born in Egypt in the 3rd century. After his parents died, he received a large inheritance and also had to care for his younger sister. He felt overwhelmed with all his responsibilities, and gave himself to God in prayer. Sometime after, he heard the call of God to leave everything and devote himself to Him. He gave his riches to the poor. Anthony’s sister joined a women’s community and he decided to become a hermit. When he was 55 years old, he decided to build a monastery to help others.
