Margaret was born in France in a very pious family. Her mother died when she was still very young and she had to care for her younger siblings. When her father died, Margaret accepted an invitation to teach in Canada. To everyone’s surprise, she agreed to leave her relatively comfortable life in France to go to Canada, a place that was barely just a colony. In Canada, she realized that there was a great need for teachers and St. Margaret founded the Congregation of Notre Dame. They opened schools and workshops where they could teach young people to manage a farm so they could survive during the times of food shortage. They opened missions and had many followers.
