January 12 - Saint Marguerite Bourgeoys

This young French woman cared for her younger siblings after the death of her mother. When her father died and her siblings were already grown up, Marguerite offered her services to the government and was sent to Canada, where there was a lack of teachers. She left her part of the inheritance to other family members and left for Canada. Upon arrival, she started building a chapel and in 1658 she opened her first school. Marguerite returned to France where she convinced six companions to go back to Canada and work with her. This was how the Congregation of Notre Dame started.
